Brent Rineck: Leaders Are the Ones Who Shape & Manage Change

In this month’s installment of our new leadership blog, "The Leader’s Circle", NetVU Chairman Brent Rineck, CPCU, CLU, ChFC, talks about dizzying technological advances and how agency leaders can cope and thrive in a world of innovation and change. "The pace of change is accelerating; there’s no doubt about that," he writes. "But it needn’t overwhelm us — although that is a danger if we don’t do a good job of managing technology at our firms." An avid runner and four-time qualifier for the Boston Marathon, Brent likes to look at leadership from the perspective of preparing for a race. He gives marathon-related pointers for being the agent of change at your firm, including:

  • "Be the regulator of change in your agency. Do you have a plan for introducing software updates and new releases at your agency? Are you being intentional about change so your staff isn’t overwhelmed?"

  • "Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. How are the users in your office adapting to change? Does the rollout of new software make sense from their perspective? Spend some time in your customers’ shoes."

  • "Be flexible and adaptable. It’s not likely that you will last long as a leader if you are rigid in your thinking or determined to do things "your way." Good leaders will draw upon their experience and recognize patterns, but they also are willing to try new approaches."

Brent notes that the new name for NetVU’s spring conference, "Accelerate, powered by NetVU," is an apt description for how we must anticipate, navigate and shape change. "Acceleration need not be a scary word. In fact, it can be exhilarating — if we learn to manage it properly," he says.

Get Set for High-Impact Learning at Accelerate, Powered by NetVU!

You told us what you want to learn. And you’ll get it at Accelerate, powered by NetVU, May 17-19 in Atlanta, where more than 200 education sessions will be on offer.

The sessions will cover all Vertafore customer and document management systems, other productivity tools, plus lots of great classes aimed at IT/Technology attendees and Executive Leadership. They’re designed for multiple learning levels — basic, intermediate and advanced. And they’re “driven by you,” says Debbie Ivie, NetVU learning experiences manager. It’s the education “you need and have asked for.”

Are you a Vertafore newbie? You’ll find training sessions designed especially for the user who has recently converted to a Vertafore system such as: AMS360, BenefitPoint, ImageRight, AIM, Sagitta, QQCatalyst and others.

Are you ready for some homework? Don’t worry. This will be the kind of homework you really want to do, promises Ivie. Education teams are assembling pre-work materials that will help you and your colleagues prepare for education sessions. The pre-work will level-set your knowledge so you can maximize your learning experience. Whether it’s a basic, intermediate or advanced session, you’ll be on the same page. Stay tuned, says Ivie.

More details to come. Education sessions are still being finalized, although much of the schedule is posted, says Ivie. “What you see today is preliminary. More classes and details will be added in the next two weeks. We’re still working to incorporate the most important system features from the newest versions of Vertafore’s software products.”

Ivie describes the collaboration process that produces such powerful learning experiences: “NetVU education development team leaders work with more than 200 volunteer educators who plan, create and deliver the quality education you expect from NetVU.” They join forces with “Vertafore’s product managers and developers to make sure the information they share is accurate and up-to-date. It is a true collaboration, all for the benefit of NetVU members,” she says.

Protect Yourself Against Email Scams This Tax Season

With the 2018 tax season in full swing, AppRiver wants to make sure taxpayers are aware of the many dangers they see surrounding this event each year. In fact, curiosity and uncertainty surrounding recent tax law changes may leave many individuals more susceptible to falling victim to one of the many tax-themed attacks that are seen this time of year. These attacks come in many forms and aim to harvest users’ credentials, scam funds and infect individuals and corporate networks.

One malware campaign AppRiver has been tracking is targeting CPA firms to infect them with the Adwind RAT. The emails are somewhat vague and come with an infected archive that contains the Java-based Trojan that can infect cross-platforms. It is also capable of infecting not only Windows OS but also Linux, Mac and Android.

Once the infection has taken place, it can harvest and exfiltrate many forms of data from the victim. We also have seen some payload variation with this attack as some have been utilizing malicious URL’s embedded in PDF files.

Another attack takes aim at users of online tax service provider Taxslayer. These messages also are serving up malware with a malicious URL in the body of the message. These attacks are posing as privacy and security updates, which is a very common technique used to dupe end-users.

Messages like this one utilizing company official graphics, spoofed senders, security updates, etc… are sent by the millions and could APPEAR to come from a company or agency that are very familiar. As the deadline to file taxes approach, we anticipate a surge in these type of attacks.

Here are some tips from the National Cybersecurity Society to help you protect yourself this tax season.

  • Reputable companies and/or tax agencies such as TaxSlayer, TurboTax, etc. will never send attachments in unsolicited email.
  • If you get any notifications that require action on your end, reach out to the entity directly (not by email reply) for details.
  • Be skeptical of any unsolicited emails or phone calls requesting personal information from you.

From Suggestions to Enhancements: Your Ideas Matter!

It’s only natural for users to seek improvements in the technology they rely on daily to run their offices. That’s why Vertafore and NetVU partnered last year to develop and roll out Ideas, a platform for Vertafore users to make suggestions, share information and collaborate on product enhancements.

"Through Ideas, Vertafore and NetVU volunteers are working together to develop updates and future releases," says Mike Foy, President, Foy Insurance. "Ideas brings together NetVU volunteers, Vertafore product managers and the idea originator to enhance Vertafore’s offerings for everyone in the customer/user community."

It all starts with logging into Ideas through My Vertafore or via the advocacy tab on the NetVU website. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll see existing ideas that have been submitted by fellow users. The Ideas tool allows you to comment and vote on these ideas, or suggest your own ideas. When submitting ideas, Foy says, it’s important that you clearly and precisely describe the challenge your idea addresses. "Give it a title that other users can find and understand," he advises. "Describe how your idea will affect other users, how it will fix a challenge or simplify the steps it takes to complete a task. Tell us what your role is in the office, how you use the product, how often you experience the challenge and how it affects the business."

NetVU’s Product Maintenance and Enhancement (PM&E) work groups meet regularly to review ideas and present the top ideas to Vertafore’s development teams review, prioritization and implementation.

Dawn Mathews, AINS, AIS, CPCU, CPIW, IMA Financial Group Inc., Wichita, Kansas, chairs the Sagitta PM&E Work Group. "We meet virtually twice monthly," she notes, "with one meeting focused solely on items that have been submitted to Ideas."

"We take great care to make sure that each idea is reviewed," echoes Angela Minutaglio, Marsh & McLennan Agency, Somerset, New Jersey, the BenefitPoint Work Group leader. "We reach out to users and update the status of ideas so that submitters know that they were reviewed. We are committed to and very passionate about the BenefitPoint user community knowing that their voices are heard and that we are working hard to make their ideas become a reality."

"Customer feedback is foundational to being successful in solving the problems our customers have," says Kevin Pham, the product manager at Vertafore who oversees Ideas.

Adds Foy, "We want to make sure NetVU members are getting the most for their investment in these products. That’s why it’s important for members to share their technology experiences and to provide Vertafore with a better understanding of their business needs. With Ideas, you truly can make a difference in your and other users’ lives." You have a responsibility to get involved today!
